When Evenings Begin to Change
The days are still warm.
Afternoon sunlight remains bright, and the trees still hold the deep green of summer. Cicadas continue to call from somewhere above, as if the season has no intention of leaving.
But evening tells a slightly different story.
The sun begins to disappear a little earlier than it did only a few weeks ago. Shadows stretch farther across the ground, and the light takes on a softer, quieter glow.
Then comes the breeze.
It is not cold.
Not yet.
But for a moment, it carries something different.
A little less of the heavy warmth of midsummer. A little more space to breathe.
You may notice it while walking home, sitting beside an open window, or simply watching the sky slowly change color.
Nothing dramatic has happened.
The leaves have not turned.
Summer has not disappeared.
And perhaps that is what makes this time of year so easy to overlook.
Seasons do not always announce themselves.
Sometimes, change arrives quietly through the length of a shadow, the sound of insects after sunset, or a breeze that feels just a little different against the skin.
For now, the days still belong to summer.
But the evenings are beginning to look ahead.
The calendar doesn't need to tell us something is changing.
Sometimes, the evening tells us first.
